Typological Fulfillment?

Earlier this month I presented a paper to the Biblical Theology Study Group of the Tyndale Fellowship arguing that when Matthew claims that the events of Jesus’ birth "fulfill" the words of Isaiah 7:14 he is referring to typological fulfillment. If you’re interested, the essay is posted here. May the Lord help us to understand his Word.

One response to “Typological Fulfillment?

  1. Thanks for posting this, Jim. I’m preaching through Matthew 5:17-20 next, which I believe hinges on our understanding of Matthew’s use of “fulfill.” I remember preaching through those first two chapters of Matthew. Apart from typology, I think its hard to make sense of “fulfill”, especially when used of Scriptures that weren’t apparently “predictive.”

I’ll look forward to reading this.
